Brian Udelhofen's DJ Shadow Page

Brian Udelhofen's DJ Shadow Page

Please go and check out this guy's video of a high school percussion group performing some tunes off DJ Shadow's Endtroducing record. One of the best 12 minutes of my life...
Maybe not THAT good, but I'm definitely amazed.

FF III - DS vs NES

Check out these pics comparing the original NES version (on the left) of the game Final Fantasy III with the new version being released on the Nintendo DS (on the right).

Hear that sound? It's the sound of Hanni clicking the buy button on Amazon .... pics

eight-speed automatic transmissions

JAPAN: Toyota working on eight-speed automatic transmissions : Auto News

I'm excited to see this, as for years now I've been saying that if we're really concerned about fuel economy we should be focused on drive train technology and not so much on powerplant technology (not that powerplant's can't get more efficient, but I think we'll get more bang for our buck in the drive train area)

Actually, since about grade 10 I've been advocating multiple transmission setups to anyone who cared to listen to me talk about this kind o'shizz. I'd love to see a vehicle with a regular 4-speed transmission at the front of the vehicle and a three speed 'transaxle multiplier' type of deal nearer the rear of the vehicle. (Of course this is working with my preference of rear-drive vehicles - 8 gears in one case probably makes more sense for front-drive applications.)

I'd love to build such a beast!

I don't think an 8-speed tranmission is that far off from two transmissions.

Trial Run

In support of my 'Trial Run' theory as presented in the comments for the last post I present [the first half of] this week's I, Cringely article.

In response to Craig's query about whether other video formats will be supported in FrontRow:
I think it will play any video format that can play IN Quicktime. Which is quite a few, and includes all the bests (like MPEG-4 and h.264). Not to mention that Quicktime (like many of Apple's products) has a very powerful plug-in architecture that allows expansion using any codec you get your grubby little hands on.

(It looks like the DivX guys are struggling with Quicktime 7 right now though)

And I think VideoLAN will convert video (almost any video) to mpeg 1 or 2 (mpeg2 is how DVDs are encoded by the way).

news

So, I know there are few of you out there as fanatical about following Apple's press releases and media events and all of that balogney as I am....

SO, I will deliver some of the news from the media event today, as best as I have been able to gather (there was no webcast).

  1. VIDEO IPOD - there is a new video iPod, and it even has a TV out port! Shipping next week!
  2. New iMAC - A new iMac design has been introduced. I would have thought this was going to wait until they wanted to ship an Intel-based machine, but I was wrong. It has a BUILT-IN iSIGHT!!!!
  3. FrontRow - a 'media center' type interface for your MAC! WOOO HOOOOOO!!!!
  4. iTunes 6 - only a few weeks after iTunes 5! Music videos are for sale, and so are TV SHOWS!! Select ABC TV shows are for sale for $2/episode!!
Engadget's got the scoop.

Taking the Work Out of Executive Car-Buying - Jalopnik

Beautiful diatribe on Jalopnik, replete with a Propaghandi reference and a great Canadian slant. Check this one out for a laugh.

One sweet Mac mini!

Speaking of birthdays (ahem) this 15 yr old kid in the UK got a wicked cake to match his present!

I won't be expecting such extravagance, by the way.
