A Snowball Headed For Hell...

So, winter has arrived in NB.

Here's a sweet winter treat for any of you homebrew candy makers out there.

Also, I wanted to weigh in on the recent movement in Canadian politics.

So, the Liberal party held their big leadership convention last weekend, which I actually followed pretty closely. I felt/feel like the outcome of that leadership convention could have profound effects on the political picture in this country, as whoever came out on top would likely become the prime minister within the year - people are pissed about a lot of stuff that's going on with the Conservative government right now, and the liberal party is seen as the only other viable choice (why people have such hangups about 'socialism' and 'organized labour' and 'regulation' I'll never know).

Anyways, first off JC's speech was classic. Arrogant and bitter, but funny and endearing. And MAN do liberals love this guy! Check this out:
"I was in China and I think Harper is even less popular there than he is here in Canada.... I met with the President 18 times - I discussed human rights every time."

Now, about the results.
Seriously, I still think Kenny D was the man to take back the country and head us down the 'right' road - his sense justice and fairness are second to none, and HE is the guy I want running my country.
I knew Ken couldn't win though, as he didn't have the delegate support he needed (he ended up doing better than I originally expected).
So, second choice was Bob Rae, a former NDP premiere. I think the NDP thing weighed him down, in the end. (See my earlier comments regarding key words that 'true liberals' wouldn't be caught dead officially supporting).
So when push came to shove I was glad to see Dion win. (ie: and not Ignatieff)
And now I'm really pretty happy about it.

At least Dion is a thinker - an intellectual (To compare, Harper is an economist, Martin is a business mogul, and Chretien is a career politician). He taught political science here in Moncton, actually, at UdeM. (YES!) I don't want to get into the whole debate about whether political science academics make good politicians or not, but he's certainly like-able. Staunch and a bit pig headed about his issues, but like-able. (Morg and I thought his mannerisms reminded us of Malcolm a bit - what do you think? I can't find a good video for this...)

Rick Mercer has some great commentary on his blog, so check that out please.

I predict, loosely, that Harper will try to force an election as early as possible so that the Liberal Party won't have time to prepare, and try to catch them off gaurd. JC pulled this same trick to try to quell the Alliance popularity in the '90s.

I predict, loosely, that Dion will win a minority share of parliment in the next parliment and will strike an official deal with the NDP to form an alliance (small 'a') government.

Dion has somehow managed to come out of the Chretien years and the Martin years, unmarked by the various 'scandals' that were attributed to the party and not associated with either camp. People worried about his english but I think he sounds great - he's a technically better orator than JC was, I think most would agree (though he'll never have the pazzaz). I think his only blemish is that he's the father of the 'clarity act' which might make him a little less than loved in Quebec, but I don't think anyone really cares as much as the press is saying they do. I think Quebecors will line up behind his environmental policy and his French heritage, and they will love his 'F-the-US' attitude and his commitment to international programs like 'true' peacekeeping and the Kyoto Accord.

Time will tell I guess....
