Che - Capitalising On A Revolutionary

Che Guevara: The Killing Machine"

The National Post is running a great article today about Che Guevara. Dan-o will be particularly interested in this one.

It talks about the commercialization of Che's image (t-shirts, posters, etc) and how most people who indulge in these items don't know a thing about Che, least of all his brutal bloodthristy treatment of fellow humans and his insatiable lust for power.

Also, it's last paragraph compares him to another, much less celebrated, revolutionary Juan Bautista Alberdi. From the article:
"But unlike the old and new darling of the left, Alberdi never killed a fly. His book, Bases y puntos de partida para la organizacion de la Republica Argentina, was the foundation of the Constitution of 1853 that limited government, opened trade, encouraged immigration and secured property rights -- thereby inaugurating 70 years of astonishing prosperity. He did not meddle in the affairs of other nations, opposing his country's war against Paraguay. And his likeness does not adorn Mike Tyson's abdomen."
Interesting stuff.

A Panda 4x4

Considering Morgan's preoccupation with Pandas lately, my preoccupation with vehicles lately, and everyone's preoccupation with fuel prices, I thought I'd put this out there for everyone to see and comment on.

With an introduction like that, how can you NOT follow the link.

Copying

This blog has been decidedly Apple-friendly thus far, but it has strayed away from being anti-Microsoft. On purpose. I think one of the biggest mistakes us Apple-faithful make is comparing Apple's stuff to Microsoft's stuff, especially when confronted with rapid Microsoft-friendly-ism.

Often, though, I'm asked why it matters to me. Why not just bend over and take the Windows suppository along with everyone else. One of those reasons is in full view today and I wanted to expose it to anyone looking for something to think about in this regard.

There are two stories running on MacDailyNews today about 'copying'. One is about a newly announced Windows technology they're calling "Microsoft Gadgets", and the other is about the user interface in the new version of Office. (they're quick)

Compare these two points of blatant 'copying' on the part of Microsoft - attempting to take Apple innovations and present them to the larger community of Windows users, a good proportion of whom will have no exposure with Apple's stuff and will be entirely accepting of these technologies as yet another example of Microsoft making their life easier (though, I've got to tell you, copying or not I don't think they've pulled it off) - compare that with another article running on Time's webiste about the new iPod nano. About how it was boldly concieved as a "let's replace the world's best selling mp3 player with something completely new right on the event horizon of the holiday season. Let's make it so insanely great that it won't matter that we're yanking a popular product, because this will be MORE popular. Better in every way." It took ~9 months to concieve and develop the nano - which is ridiculous; nobody brings products to market that fast.

Microsoft = copy cats; tyrannical monopolists; jerks
Apple = bold innovators; risk takers;

I'm not saying Microsoft never invents anything on it's own, by the way. But it doesn't happen very often.

If you know me at all, it'll be easy for you to understand why Apple draws me in while Microsoft repels me away.

The Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security

The Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security

This article was a great read and very inspiring.

I'd love to hear what some of my security minded brethren think of it.

Widgets

For those of us out there who, for whatever reason, are using Microsoft Windows for all or part of the daily grind, I wanted to bring this to the forefront.

A while ago, Apple introduced it's new operating system version 10.4 (Tiger), which included, among many other things, a new feature they called 'Dashboard'. Dashboard allows you to run little applets or 'widgets' - small programs that usually only do one thing, but do it well, and allows you to quickly (with one glance) see what's up with the world via RSS aggregators, weather watchers, stock tickers, webcams, world clocks, etc.

A previously existing product called Konfabulator was providing a very similar feature set prior to Tiger's introduction.

Since Tiger was introduced, Konfabulator was sold to Yahoo! and Yahoo! is now giving it away!

I use it all the time and I love it. My favourite widget is a webcam viewer for SleepyChinchila.com.

Terrible

Please go listen to this interview with the mayor of New Orleans.
He sounds desperate. Like he's totally lost his cool.
I hope the whole world hears this recording. Not because I want to bash on the American Feds, or because I want to reveal the dark underbelly of American society or whatever, but because he's watching his city die and all the people that are supposed to help him aren't giving him an inch. I can't imagine feeling as hopeless as he sounds at the end of this interview.
To me, this is the REAL story.

He'll probably never be able to work in American politics again, but he spoke his mind and spoke the truth.

(It's like the infamous Gretzky interview from a few years back where he called the officials out for unfairly treating Canadian teams.)

Please Buy Gas

The Freakonomics self-proclaimed 'rogue-economist' Steven D. Levitt wrote on his blog today about an e-mail circulating (yes, I circulated too) and shows its flaws to the world. Nice idea, poor execution.
