Coming Up Joel

Everything seems to be coming up 'Joel' today and so I thought I'd share a few things with you.

Comments:
Although its always fun to think about spaghetti monsters Dawkins scholarship has been serious questioned:

I don't know if I would ever argue for Dawkins' scholarship either.

I think the whole 'rationalist' movement with Descartes and all his homeboys has been pretty much considered 'way old skool' for some time now... since Kant has his revelations if I'm correct. Maybe Dan and other philosophy readers can elaborate.

Sensationalist, yes.

However.... he's also very entertaining.

Hey Joel,

Micro-credit loans are growing in popular support in the development policy field. Well, a little bit. It's such a great way to help the rural poor.

Interestingly, there's a micro-credit conference going on at Dal next month. I really want to go but it costs $50USD/day for a student, $400USD/day for everyone else.

People who work for government don't care how much this shit costs. The department covers it. So many issues here, so many!

Geez Matt - you've got a graduate degree in computer security! I certainly don't think YOU are a fool - esp since you're probably able to reinstall/disinfect/etc to your heart's content. Also, the biggest reason I think the 'average' user needs security/AV software is because they're not savvy enough to avoid the simple phish attacks that deliver so much modern malware.
Seriously, I think firewalls are pretty much all the security most people need.
And I agree with you - they have no business being on your actual computer! A firewall in your router is always the best way to go - uses less power and will be much more effective.
I also loathe the memory- and cycle-sucking properties of modern AV software

I don't want to talk about security too much but I have a few more things to say. :)

1 - I have started doing all of my websurfing from home within a virtual machine (sandboxed surfing).
2 - My Firefox webbrowser at work has a plugin called noscript installed that by default refuses any scripting such as activex, javascript and java unless I specify the site as trusted.
3 - Steven Gibbson (of the Security Now podcast) also doesn't use any AV software.
4 - You are right about the average user though. I wouldn't trust my parents to run a PC without AV software. There PC is getting very old and I'm trying to convince them to run some sort of Linux box.
5 - Finally, long time no near pal. I should have come around this website a bit sooner. :)

Matt
